BFPA Sustainability and Net Zero

11 December, 2024

The British Fluid Power Association has made significant strides in its mission to promote sustainability within the fluid power industry throughout 2024. With a focus on the road to net-zero and supporting its members in making meaningful environmental progress, the association has been at the forefront of driving positive change across the sector. This year, the BFPA has not only worked to reduce its own environmental impact but has also developed a range of resources and initiatives, via our partnership with CAFA, to help its members adopt sustainable practices and work towards their own carbon neutrality goals.

A key component of the BFPA’s 2024 strategy has been working collaboratively with Climate Action For Associations (CAFA). CAFA's mission is to harness the collective power and influence of the membership sector to accelerate the transition of whole sectors, systems and professions. CAFA’s guidance has enabled the BFPA to implement a climate action and sustainability programme internally as well as deliver climate action and sustainability support to our members.

Recognising that sustainability in fluid power encompasses everything from energy-efficient products to eco-friendly manufacturing processes, and waste management to sustainable supply chains, the association has worked closely with CAFA to develop practical guides and best practices. These resources have empowered members to understand how they can minimise their carbon footprints, reduce waste, and improve energy efficiency across the supply chain. By offering these materials, the BFPA has ensured that its members are not only aware of the challenges posed by climate change but are also equipped with the tools they need to act. The association’s commitment to providing this valuable resource underscores its dedication to helping members navigate the complexities of sustainability in an ever-changing regulatory and technological landscape. In addition to the Sustainability Hub, we held a well-attended workshop and will be introducing webinars in early 2025 to continue educating our members. These events highlight the importance of incorporating sustainability into business strategy and the growing demand for environmentally responsible practices from customers and stakeholders alike.

As 2024 draws to a close, the BFPA is already looking ahead to the coming year with an even greater commitment to increasing the support and resources available to its members. The association plans to expand its sustainability initiatives by providing more detailed guidance on specific areas such as renewable energy integration, sustainable supply chain management, and the adoption of emerging technologies. The focus will continue to be on helping businesses reduce their environmental impact while maintaining operational efficiency and profitability.

Furthermore, the BFPA will be working to strengthen its collaboration with government bodies and regulatory agencies to ensure that the fluid power industry is represented in future sustainability discussions and policy decisions. By advocating for policies that support innovation and incentivise sustainability efforts, the association aims to create an environment in which businesses can thrive while contributing to the global transition to a low-carbon economy.

2024 has been a year of progress for the BFPA as it has worked tirelessly to guide its members on their sustainability journeys. With a growing range of resources, initiatives, and partnerships, the association is wellpositioned to continue leading the industry towards a net-zero future in 2025 and beyond.
