Compressor specifically designed for hybrid, fully electric and fuel cell vehicles

09 November, 2022

The electrification of commercial trucks and buses is key to a sustainable transport industry, and it places far greater demand on a vehicle’s ancillary equipment. This is especially true for the onboard compressor, which is responsible for so many critical systems. Gardner Denver has set out to meet this challenge with TX01, the latest offering in its TX series.

This new compressor is specifically designed for hybrid, fully electric and fuel cell vehicles. It builds on the successes of earlier models, delivering market-leading performance in a compact and lightweight package. The TX02, for example, offered an airend weight of just 21 kg wet, with a total package weight of just over 43kg. These figures are still impressive but the TX01 goes even further, with a reduction in airend weight of just 18kg wet and clocking in at just 40kg overall.

The TX01 is also quiet despite being capable of reaching variable speeds between 1400-3500 rpm. In free field noise tests, the machine has recorded a noise level of 69dBA and below at a distance of one metre. This means the TX01 can be installed adjacent to the passenger cabin with no loss of comfort.

Rotary vane technology has several other important advantages, including simple servicing and maintenance due to fewer moving parts, as well as market-leading energy efficiency. The TX01 also delivers pulsation-free air, eliminating unwanted vibrations.

Compressed air is a key component for the safe and reliable function of pneumatic brakes, suspension, kneeling and door operation systems in larger commercial vehicles. As with all compressors from Gardner Denver, the technology has been selected as it best meets the demands of today’s e-Mobility market and outperforms competing designs in this space. Vane compressors also benefit from low maintenance costs and a long expected service life. Taken together, these make the TX01 a compelling product for OEMs and operators of hybrid, fully electric and fuel cell trucks and buses.

Working seamlessly with a vehicle’s architecture

Other key benefits include an integrated motor inverter as well as software and electronic capabilities that are able to work seamlessly with a vehicle’s architecture. This integrated offering is also useful for operators that are electrifying their existing fleet. Perhaps most important of all, the TX01 is modular, meaning it can be installed as a ‘plug and play’ solution with minimal disruption to a vehicle’s layout. However, Gardner Denver’s engineers are also able to make modifications and actively encourage customers to engage at the earliest stages to ensure technical changes are accommodated.

Jonathan Marsh, director of e-mobility at Gardner Denver Transport Solutions, says: “Our team of engineers have reappraised the basic design of the TX series in line with customer requirements for an easily integrated compressed air solution. The TX01 is now much smaller when compared to earlier models, reflecting the need for simpler and lighter compressors on today’s hybrid, fully electric and fuel cell trucks and commercial trucks. All of this has been done without compromising on performance, making it the most versatile compressor on the market. These kinds of changes may seem negligible but have a profound impact on overall performance when out on the road. We will continue to drive forward what’s possible from pneumatic technology, in turn making it easier for OEMs and operators to transition to greener methods of transport.”

Gardner Denver Transport Solutions is a provider of specialist equipment used to transfer dry and liquid bulk materials from road tankers and other vehicles. The company has continued to evolve its portfolio and now also produces tailored on-board power systems for operating equipment and bespoke electric compressor packages for e-mobility vehicle solutions.
