Ez-Coil – ‘reinventing the reel’

28 April, 2016

An operator is working with an uncoiled length of hose latched on spring rewind hose reel. A colleague walks past and accidently catches the hose unlatching the reel and releasing the hose. The operator drops the tool and the hose retracts uncontrollably causing damage to the workshop and the reel and risking injury to those present.

With this possible scenario in mind, the EZ-Coil slow retraction system has been developed by the R&D team at Coxreels in the US. Available in the UK from Hose Reels Direct, EZ-Coil hose reels reduce the rewind speed by 80 per cent so if the above scenario happens the hose simply winds back onto the reel slowly just as if it was being walked back on. This system can also stop damage caused by accidentally unlatching the reel or careless operation.

Hose Reels Direct comments that previous systems have required costly and complicated spring mechanisms to achieve the same effect, which increases weight and size. The company adds that these mechanisms also increased the resistance taking more effort when pulling out the hose.

Because the EZ-Coil system is a small hub fitted to a standard spring case there is very little extra weight and no change in size. EZ-Coil can also be retro fitted to existing Coxreels making it an effective upgrade to health & safety in the workplace.

Hose Reels Direct adds that while this system isn’t always necessary, EZ-Coil reels are ideal for safety sensitive applications such as hose using high pressures, work areas with high personal traffic and areas that have previously experienced damaged reels and equipment from accidental unlatching of spring reels.
