More manufacturing power makes savings

04 January, 2011

Thorite, the UK distributor of compressed air products and process systems, has been working closely with Surgical Innovations in Leeds to help boost production while making significant savings on energy costs.

Surgical Innovations is a leading manufacturer of laparoscopic instruments used in minimally invasive surgery. Their existing 11kW air compressor was struggling to cope with the company’s pneumatic requirements, due to the increase in numbers of new, high tech machinery in the facility, as part of their strategy of “bringing manufacturing home”.

This in turn led to the hire of a 22kW compressor from Thorite to enable power demands to be fully assessed through a period of data logging.

The data logging identified the need for a compressor of even greater capacity and following the advice of Steve Bradbury, Thorite’s Capital Equipment Sales Engineer, a 30kW Hydrovane variable speed drive compressor and associated equipment has been purchased and installed.

The new compressor not only meets Surgical Innovations’ compressed air demands, but its advanced, energy efficient design will enable the company to make savings in annual electrical running costs of well over £3000 - and at the same time reduce their carbon footprint by 14.98 tonnes per year.

These savings allowed Surgical Innovations to qualify for an interest free loan of £7,500 from The Carbon Trust, which represents half of the total project cost. Basically this means that both the loan and the upgraded machinery cost will be paid off in less than 5 years, simply from reduced energy costs, with the savings continuing into the future.
