BCAS update (April 2013)
Pneurop 2013 Plenary Meeting
One of the benefits of BCAS membership is that you can participate in the Pneurop Plenary held each year. Pneurop is the European committee of manufacturers of compressors, vacuum pumps and pneumatic tools. BCAS is secretariat for a number of Pneurop committees and chair of the National Secretaries (See http://www.pneurop.eu for details).
On behalf of the Board and the Members of the VDMA Compressors, Compressed Air and Vacuum Technology Association, BCAS would like to invite its members to the Pneurop Plenary Meeting 2013, which will be held from the 13 to 15 June 2013 in Munich, the capital of the German Federal State of Bavaria.
BCAS comments that the Pneurop Plenary Meeting is an important event for our industry. “It affords you and your company a unique opportunity to gain an early insight into EU plans for legislation and allows us to strengthen our valuable network within the industry in order to meet tomorrow's economic, legislative and social challenges.”
This year, BCAS has defined a leading theme for its Plenary Meeting: Eco-design. To highlight this, the society will begin with two presentations on Friday morning. The first, by Orgalime, will give an overview of the European Policies related to energy and sustainability, demonstrating the impact on our industry. The second, by a policy officer of the European commission DG ENER, will provide information regarding the Eco Design Directive as a tool for market transformation. These will be followed by the Pneurop product committees presentation of their major project results and plans for future projects in the field of Eco Design. The proceedings will close with a presentation concerning the current status of the preparatory study to Lot 31-compressors.
Following the formal programme, attendees will have the opportunity to experience some of Munich’s attractions. BCAS offers its partners guided tours to some of Munich’s top sights. All tours will start at the Pneurop reception desk.
To conclude, attendees will come together on Thursday evening for the Welcome Dinner in the Hofbräuhaus Munich. This will be followed on Friday evening by the Formal Dinner in the restaurant Bavarie, located at BMW World.

Competent Examiner Course
The next BCAS Competent Examiner course is being held in Sheffield from 3 to 7 June 2013. This is a 5-day course for compressed air engineers leading to a BCAS certificate in compressed air system testing and examination.
As the owner or user of a compressed air system operating in excess of 0.5 bar and containing an air receiver you must comply with 15 regulations, one of which is the requirement under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations to have a written scheme and to have examinations of the equipment carried out at intervals specified within that scheme.
BCAS developed this course to provide the basic knowledge and skills necessary to be able to offer examination services in accordance with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations. This qualification assures your customer that you have reached an approved standard to carry out the function of a Competent Examiner. In the event of an accident, such a certificate would demonstrate to the Health and Safety Executive that you have met your duty of care obligations.
Who should attend the course?
· Users of compressed air to conduct in-house examination of their own systems
· Distributors of compressed air equipment or services in order to offer a service to their customers with the added reassurance of their staff having achieved certification.
· Maintenance service companies.
· Field inspectors who offer the service as part of insurance cover.
[subhead] What prior knowledge is required?
Candidates are expected to have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in the compressed air industry, and to be aware of the examination requirements contained within the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations.
Course structure and subject areas
The course contains three assessments:
· Hands-on safety testing of air receivers, valves and pressure gauges.
· A practical non-destructive testing theory assessment.
· Knowledge test, closed book, multiple choice.
Candidates successfully completing all the course assessments will be awarded the BCAS Competent Examiner Certificate. This provides the underpinning knowledge and skills required to contribute towards becoming a competent person.
Course Fees:
· BCAS full member: £1250.
· Non-member: £2145.
All the above fees are +VAT at current rate. Please refer to the BCAS website for up to date prices of all our training courses. The fee for this 5-day course includes all course materials, literature and refreshments but excludes accommodation.
