BCAS update (March 2013)

24 March, 2013

Ecodesign study on air compressors

Sustainable industrial policy aims in particular at developing a policy to foster environmental and energy efficient products in the internal market. The Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC is the cornerstone of this approach.
The product group Compressors was identified as priority group in the first iteration of the Ecodesign Working Plan (period 2009-2011). In order to investigate the appropriateness of measures a study (preparatory study) is undertaken that proves the viability, feasibility and effectiveness of such measures. Throughout this process stakeholder consultation is ensured.
The preparatory study for Compressors followed from a call for tenders ENER/C3/413-2010, in which the scope of this preparatory study is described as: Lot 31 – Products in motor systems outside the scope of the Lot 30 and the Regulation 640/209 on electric motors, in particular compressors, including small compressors, and their possible drives.
The first Stakeholder Meeting will be held on 14 March 2013 at the DIAMANT Building, Brussels (the home of Pneurop)
After a welcome and introduction by Pneurop, host of the meeting, the following presentations will be given:

·         Task 1 (Product Definition) and Task 2 (Economics and Market) by study author.

·         Work progress for Task 3 (Consumer Behaviour and Local Infrastructure).

·         Presentation of Task 4 (Technical Analysis of Existing Products).

The meeting will then hold a discussion of key issues and next tasks. BCAS is actively involved as a Stakeholder and presents the views of its members to the meeting. For further information or if you wish to attend the meeting, email technical@bcas.org.uk

Competent Examiner Course

A unique five-day course, run on demand throughout the year in Sheffield. The course is for compressed air engineers leading to a BCAS certificate in compressed air system testing and examination. It provides both knowledge-based and practical ‘hands on’ non-destructive testing techniques required for those who conduct examinations under the Written Scheme of Examination, required by the Pressure Systems Regulations 2000:128 - Compressed Air Systems.
The Competent Examiner course fees are: BCAS Members £1250 and for non-members £2145 and VAT applies at the current rate to all fees. If you have any questions or would like to enrol anyone for this course contact technical officer Greg Bordiak at the BCAS office.
