50th anniversary of CETOP

What is CETOP? CETOP is the abbreviation of Comité Européen des Transmissions Oléohydrauliques et Pneumatiques. CETOP is therefore the International umbrella organisation for 18 national Fluid Power Associations in Europe (of which BFPA is one), each of which is a member of CETOP – and the list continues to grow. The work of CETOP covers a long list of activities; including Education, Lobbying, Statistics, Technical and EU Directives all on behalf of the industry.
CETOP represents more than 1000 companies from all sections of the fluid power industry; including manufacturers, distributors, education establishments and consultants. In total this constitutes an industry with almost 70,000 employees and a market value of about 13 billion euros.
Having been established in June 1962, June 2012 marks 50 years of CETOP, a milestone that was suitably celebrated in Paris to coincide with a presidents’ council meeting. Past presidents were invited in addition to a number that had been active in CETOP work over the years. The BFPA was represented in this category by Malcolm Kelly the founder of Integrated Hydraulics and who was a CETOP president in the 1990s, and Neil Percival director BFPA until 2001. During the celebratory dinner a number of the longstanding friends of CETOP gave presentations reflecting on their time and work with the CETOP council.
All were in agreement on the importance of CETOP and its role in the fluid power business and wished it well for the next 50 years.

BFPA 2012/13 Directory

Many association members will by now already have seen a copy of the 2012/13 BFPA Directory with its distinctive front cover. For those who have not received a copy and would like one please contact the office and it will be sent without delay.
In this day and age of social networking it does seem that there is still a good demand for a printed version of the BFPA Yearbook and Directory, which is not only easy to follow but a useful source of interesting information about the association and its members. A new feature for this year is the key personnel section; those companies that have taken a profile page will see their most significant members of staff listed in a business card format.
We trust you will find the company features of interest, but should you have some interesting stories of your own to tell please let the BFPA office know and we will put in a request for the next edition of the Yearbook. Over 5000 copies of the yearbook will be mailed out to the DFA Media database, which will include many of the main customers for fluid power product in the UK. In addition many 100s of copies will be distributed at exhibitions both at home and abroad.

Recognising the importance of good Apprentices

Many of those now running a fluid power company, or in a senior position with one of the large multinational concerns, will have started their career as an apprentice and will often be heard bemoaning the quality of the modern apprenticeship – well, help is at hand.
Malcolm Kelly, the founder of Integrated Hydraulics Ltd. some 35 years ago, recently acquired by the Eaton Group and has put up some funding to start an award scheme that will be known as the BFPA Apprentice of the Year. The BFPA is proud to be launching this long-overdue initiative, but it will only be a success if plenty of member companies submit applications from their more able apprentices.
Should you be interested in nominating one or a number of your own apprentices for this award please contact Ian Morris at the BFPA office and the scheme will be explained in more detail. The first formal award ceremony is planned to be held at the 2013 AGM, and in addition to the award being presented the sponsoring company will itself benefit from some valuable trade press publicity.
