BCAS update (July/August 2012)
BCAS 2012 Autumn Conference registration now open
The BCAS Conferences are popular events where members can hear expert speakers covering a range of relevant topics and network with their peers during the breakfast and lunch breaks.
The conferences are free for BCAS members and there are always a few places set aside for non-members who can attend (Conference fee is £75 +VAT per person, which is refunded if after the event their company applies for and is accepted into BCAS membership). Topics confirmed so far cover Government Tax Credits for SMEs, Plant Room Pests and Technical updates.
Also, by popular demand, the Land Rover Experience is again being held in the afternoon after the conference (there are limited places available) at a cost of just £65 +VAT. To ensure your place is reserved send an email to chris@bcas.org.uk as soon as possible to take the challenge of off-road driving and experience driving adventures like no other.
Health and safety cost recovery scheme to start in October 2012
New, detailed guidancehas been published on HSE's website (www.hse.gov.uk/fee-for-intervention/index.htm) setting out how the scheme will work in practice. Developed in consultation with representatives from industry, it explains how FFI works and includes examples illustrating how it would be applied.
FFI recovers costs from those who break health and safety laws for the time and effort HSE spends helping to put matters right such as, investigating and taking enforcement action. The proposed Fee for Intervention hourly rate for 2012/13 is £124. Law-abiding businesses will be free from costs and will not pay a fee.
Gordon MacDonald, HSE's programme director, said: "Confirming the date for the start of Fee For Intervention and publishing the guidance will give duty holders clarity and certainty about the start of the scheme and what they can expect. We have worked with industry representatives in shaping the final form of the scheme and the published guidance explains how the scheme will work and what businesses can do to comply with the law and avoid incurring a fee. It is right that those who break the law should pay their fair share of the costs to put things right - and not the public purse. Firms who manage workplace risks properly will not pay."
The HSE Board recommended the introduction of FFI to ministers in December 2011. HSE has completed a successful test run of the scheme in preparation for its start in October.

BCAS appoints two new board members to support distribution network
The British Compressed Air Society (BCAS) has appointed two new members to its executive board to represent the interests of its distributor member network.
James Maziak, managing director of Maziak Compressor Services in Northamptonshire, and Mark Scott, managing director of Leicester-based Compressed Air Solutions, will be representing the society’s distributor base, helping to shape the future direction and ambitions of the industry.
In their new roles, Maziak and Scott have established a distributor subcommittee, providing the opportunity for industry professionals, from sole traders through to multi-branch businesses to meet and develop industry best practice. Future plans include creating a member ratings’ scheme, based on aspects such as financial stability, engineering competence and service support, helping end customers to make an informed decision on the right compressor provider for their business needs.
Chris Dee, BCAS executive director, commented: "We are pleased to welcome James and Mark to the BCAS board and look forward to the wealth of knowledge and expertise that they can bring to the association. BCAS has been built on the professionalism and experience of its members in order to provide the best quality service to customers. Therefore, ensuring that our distributors, who are an essential component in achieving our aims are well represented and have the opportunity to share their insight and expertise is invaluable."
