Compressor raises Pepper’s Ghosts at York’s DIG (Dec 2011)
The UK pneumatic products and process systems distributor, Thorite, has supplied a Junair oil-free compressor to York Archaeological Trust’s DIG, which is a sister attraction located close to the Trust’s famous JORVIK Viking Centre.
The compressor is operating in the “York Revealed” attraction at DIG, where visitors view a large turntable which is divided into four sections. A combination of mechanical and big screen TV technology enables the reflected images of guides to appear and explain four different scenes showing York as it was in Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian times, using a technique known as Pepper’s Ghost.
Pepper’s Ghost is a fascinating illusion used by theatres and magicians. Using a plate glass, a half silvered mirror and special lighting techniques it can make objects seem to appear or disappear, become transparent or enable one object or scene to morph into another, and the Junair compressor assists with the illusion by activating pneumatic rams which raise up each of the different scenes in turn.
Mark Shepherd, the Trust’s Technical Manager, is delighted with the compressor’s performance and said: “When we explained our requirements to Thorite their Capital Equipment Sales Engineer, Steve Bradbury, advised us to select the Junair compressor as he assured us it was silent in operation and completely reliable – and this has certainly proved to be the case.”
Junair manufactures just one of the huge variety of high quality compressor ranges available from Thorite, which boasts the widest choice and biggest stockholding of compressors in the country and are available from any of Thorite’s nine regional branches in Blackburn, Bolton, Bradford, Doncaster, Huddersfield, Leeds, Rochdale, Sheffield and North Shields.
