New three-way ball sector valve enhances flow control

Schubert & Salzer Control Systems has introduced a new three-way ball sector valve, which the company says is the first of its kind. Designed to achieve high volumetric flow rates that are nearly identical in all directions, this valve aims to improve the control of flow rates for liquids and gases in various industrial processes, where three-way valves are commonly used for mixing or splitting media


According to Schubert & Salzer, the valve’s design offers approximately 20% higher KVS values compared to conventional three-way valves. This is achieved through the design of both the ball sector and the valve body, allowing for straight flow in one direction and minimal flow deflection in the other, resulting in consistent and high flow rates.

The valve is engineered to ensure excellent control accuracy. The optimised contour of the ball sector, combined with a backlash-free bearing, enables a large control range with a positioning angle of 90 degrees and a rangeability of 300:1. The forces exerted by the flowing media are absorbed by the bearing shafts, allowing pneumatic or electric actuators to require low actuation forces. Additionally, the actuator torque remains relatively constant across the entire actuation range, ensuring stable control accuracy even with changes in differential pressure.

The flexibility of the valve’s design allows the actuator to be mounted on either the upper or lower shaft end, accommodating various installation requirements.

For enhanced control capabilities, the three-way ball sector valve can be paired with Schubert & Salzer’s Type 8049 digital positioner. This combination offers extensive status data for analysis and supports predictive maintenance. The controller can be equipped with IO-Link, providing further integration options.

These valves are particularly suited for temperature control and mixing processes across industries such as steel, chemical, food and beverage, power generation, and the manufacturing of plastic and rubber products. They are also applicable in test bench environments.
