Hydraulic cylinders and split flow pump solution

Enerpac cylinders and a Larzep split flow pump are playing a crucial structural role in the refurbishment of the Mülheim Suspension Bridge over the River Rhine in Cologne, Germany. During the replacement of the original steel centre frame, road, and tram track foundations, these hydraulic cylinders are being used within a temporary steel frame to prevent the two halves of the bridge from collapsing inward, which could otherwise lead to structural failure.


Opened in 1951, the Mülheim Bridge has a main span of 315 metres and a total length of 683 metres. The bridge features pedestrian walkways on either side, as well as a central section comprising a two-lane highway, a two-lane tram track, and another two-lane highway. The extensive wear on the bridge has necessitated a complete overhaul of both the bridge and its approach roads.

The refurbishment is being managed by SEH Eiffage, a leading German engineering and construction firm. The project is organised into five phases, with sections of the public walkways, road, and tram tracks being replaced. Phase 2, which is divided into three parts, involves replacing most of the bridge deck, including the central tram tracks and their foundations.

Maintaining the stability of the bridge structure is essential throughout the refurbishment, especially during Phase 2. To prevent the bridge deck from collapsing after the removal of the road and tram track foundations, SEH Eiffage has developed a 20-metre-long temporary steel frame. This frame is progressively moved along the bridge deck as the foundations are removed and replaced.

To provide the necessary hydraulic force to keep the bridge apart, SEH Eiffage has chosen 48 Enerpac 100-ton locknut cylinders, each with a stroke of 150 mm. These cylinders are centrally controlled using a Larzep split flow pump and are operated in groups via a central distribution blovk. By measuring the forces on the steel frame, SEH Eiffage can adjust the pump’s strokes to ensure the stability of the bridge deck.

Phase 2 of the Mülheim Bridge refurbishment is scheduled for completion in November 2024.

Enerpac 100-ton locknut cylinders

The Enerpac 100t high pressure lock nut hydraulic cylinders are designed for mechanical load holding over extended periods. These cylinders are single-acting with a high-strength return spring, allowing for rapid retraction. This feature enables quicker release and repositioning of the steel frame compared to conventional cylinders.
