Competitive washdown servomotor

28 February, 2011

Micromech has introduced the food grade version of Kollmorgen’s AKM servomotor; specifically designed for the food & beverage industry. Among other developments, this new range of AKM motors provides an effective protective 2-K coating, IP67-rated seal configuration and stainless steel hardware on all precision interfaces.

Based on proven AKM electromagnetics, these new motors are available in frame sizes two through six, static torque’s from 1Nm to 25. The main applications that benefit from these motors are those subject to strict hygiene regulations, which are aimed at avoiding germ formation, corrosion and those situations where periodic cleaning is imperative. However, by designing these special motors to be not only hygienic but also cost-effective, they can also benefit a wider target market – for example, the packaging industry.

Higher purification rating
Micromech reports that there are clear benefits due to the higher purification rating, which is achieved with no additional cover or special protection required for the motor casing which keeps costs down. Also, the use of expensive high-grade steel is required only on the shaft, screws and plug connections; again saving money. With an increased motor life, these motors are also said to provide a solution for a large number of applications not requiring stainless steel motor casings.

They are resistant to many chemicals, particularly cleaning products with pH values of between >2 and < 12 as well as protection against corrosion. The convenient design of the AKM, with its rounded and flat surfaces, is claimed to prevent dirt from getting into areas where germs could form. The coating material used for the washdown is available in a stainless steel design and is thus resistant to alkaline solutions and acids. The coating material used for the AKM Washdown Food complies with the requirements of the FDA as well as being resistant to alkaline solutions and acids.

Rotary seal shaft meets FDA requirements
The bearing design is in accordance with FDA regulations so the washdown
food version uses only lubricants that are suitable for foodstuffs. Both the washdown designs comply with the IP 67 degree of protection incorporating the AKM PTFE shaft seal. In the case of the AKM Washdown food version the rotary seal shaft meets the crucial requirements of the FDA.

The supply and feedback connections are both standard European sizes 1.0 with special stainless steel finish and straight connectors available. The cables are also available with special stainless steel mating plugs where required. The motors operate in an environment temperature of 0 to 60degC and accommodate standard refrigeration. The range meets international standards of UL, CE, FDA, RoHs and USDA.
