Stäubli remote handling couplings for the nuclear industry

20 May, 2009

Stäubli has added the new RBE TM connector to its RBE range of quick-release couplings; specially designed for handling by remote control manipulators. Stäubli RBE connectors are designed for industry-wide applications where quick and secure connection of any fluid or gas is required. Their modular construction based on five coupling sizes, three materials and seven seal types, makes them suitable for a broad range of applications.
Connection is quick and easy, with automatic locking; disconnection requires depression of the release button mechanism. But where connections are being performed remotely by manipulators, either in confinement cells or glove boxes, managing connections can be more difficult. In response to this need, Stäubli has introduced the new RBE TM version.
The RBE TM has been specifically designed for remote handling. It has a square body and ribbed faces for better pincer gripping, a raised push button for easy disconnection and a front flange allowing the pincer to grasp from behind and provide an effective axial thrust. The long pre-guiding of the plug into the socket results in an easy connection in any position.
Again the modular design allows several configurations. Either the plug or socket can be fixed; the plug can be fitted to either a sealed bulkhead or on a weld nut; shut off can be single or double or totally un-valved and a range of seals are available to suit the gas or fluid involved. The coupling is available in three sizes – 6mm, 8mm and 11mm nominal diameter and is suitable for pressures up to 350 bar. Stäubli product specialists are available to provide advice on the precise configuration of the RBE TM to meet specific applications.
Typical applications in the nuclear industry are for waste treatment, decommissioning or any application where remote connection is required.
