Stop cylinders for braking and holding of heavy conveyed loads (Mar 09)

20 May, 2009

Parker-Origa has introduced a range of stop cylinders that provide damped braking and reliable holding of heavy conveyed loads. Variants are available for both horizontal and vertical installation, and the design is said to facilitate easy change of the integrated shock absorber element. This is claimed to enable the damping characteristics to be easily tailored to changing workpiece loads and speeds, and allowing a single product to meet the needs of a diverse range of applications.

Smooth deceleration characteristics
Parker-Origa’s stop cylinders have been developed to provide smooth deceleration characteristics to safeguard the workpiece as well as reliably holding heavy loads. The ability to simply lock the stop cylinders in their rearmost end position prevents the workpiece from rebounding. The easily replaceable shock absorbers are selected according to the weight of the conveyed load and the speed of movement. If the conveyed load is changed, the speed adjusted, or the mass of the workpiece to be stopped or altered, the shock absorber can be quickly and easily changed, even in the installed condition.
Changing the direction of travel of the conveyed load is not a problem either: the stop cylinder is readily adjusted simply by twisting the stop head. And if a change of operation is required, from ‘stop’ to ‘free travel’ of the conveyed load, the rocker mechanism of the stop cylinder can be easily deactivated, without the need for tools.
A number of methods of operation are catered for according to the requirements of the application. Different models in the range allow the workpiece to be stopped by a shock absorber and roller lever combination, roller lever alone, or piston rod. With a maximum operating pressure of 10bar, the stop cylinders are said to be able to handle workpieces of up to 1700 kg and conveyor speeds of up to 45m/min.

Single- or double-acting versions
The stop cylinders are currently available in single-acting (with spring return) or double-acting versions. As an option, position switches can be fitted for the rocker and the piston rod to provide positional feedback.
