Young female engineers celebrated at industry award ceremony
Three young female engineers were recently announced as the winners of the Institution of Engineering and Technology's (IET) annual Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards. The three winners were: •\tAbbie Hutty – Young Woman Engineer of the Year. •\tSara Underwood – Mary George Prize for Apprentices. •\tYasmin Ali – Women's Engineering Society (WES) Prize. Now in its 37th year, the awards honour the very best young female engineers working in the UK, and seek to highlight the achievements of women in engineering and encourage others to enter the profession. Currently, just 7 per cent of the engineering workforce is female. The three winners joined three other finalists at The Pullman Hotel, London St. Pancras where they received their trophies and cheques. The IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year awards winners will become ambassadors for the profession, encouraging more females to consider engineering as a career. The headline sponsors for YWE 2013 included; BP, GCHQ, Intel, Ofcom, Royal Air Force, UKAPE, Virgin Media and Shell.
