The benefits of refurbishment
Many organisations are realising the benefits of extending the lifecycle of their heavy equipment portfolio. Heavy machinery is an investment that requires a significant ROI. In a tough economic climate, it is prudent to consider planned maintenance as well as refurbishment.
Of course, reactive scenarios will always be a requirement whereby mobile hydraulic hose replacement and equipment diagnostics and repair services continue to be of great advantage. However, there are steps that can be taken to enhance the life span of equipment such as regular cleaning, inspection and testing of parts and lubricants. Ultimately, heavy usage will require a refurbishment exercise.
David McLean, hydraulics division manager at Tidyco Ltd, discussed this point in relation to a recent project for one of Tidyco’s clients: “Tidyco took possession of a 16-tonne grab used by a waste management company. The grab is pivotal in the effective transfer and manoeuvre of heavy waste. Understandably, such working conditions mean that the equipment is prone to a requirement for regular maintenance.
“We restored the machinery to its former glory, deep cleaned, replaced required parts and re-sprayed. Refurb was also given to the power pack as well as all associated pistons. Importantly, an asset management badge was affixed to the unit which means that scheduled and planned maintenance alerts are now automated.”
