Southern Manufacturing 2018 – A new look but a familiar feel

12 December, 2017

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics turns a respectable 20 years old in 2018. However, upstaging even that worthy achievement is perhaps the still bigger news that, from 2018 onwards, the show will move into a new permanent venue for the first time.

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2018 opens from 6 to 8 February. Admission to the show is free.

Since its humble beginnings at Thorpe Park, the show has taken place in a purpose built temporary venue. Outgrowing its first site, the show moved to Farnborough in 2008 and since then has grown exponentially into an 18,000m² international event attracting some 800 exhibitors and around 9000 visitors annually.

Work began last year on a brand new exhibition centre on the Farnborough site, which is now nearing completion. Southern Manufacturing will be the first major exhibition to be held in the new Hall 1 development, a £30 million state-of-the-art 20,000m² exhibition and conference centre. Hall 1 is the largest exhibition venue development in the UK for the past 20 years and is set to very quickly become one of the main shop fronts for UK engineering expertise, not least of all through its premier showcase event, the Farnborough Airshow.

While the setting may have changed, it is very much business as usual for Southern Manufacturing 2018, with the confirmed exhibitor list currently in the hundreds and growing day by day. As in previous years the show will host a huge variety of firms, covering the entire spectrum of engineering enterprise from production hardware to components; from fabrication to high-tech electronics. From the perspective of those interested in fluid power and motion, the show offers plenty to see.

Kabelschlepp Metool returns with its comprehensive range of carriers, designed to provide vital protection to your moving cables and hoses. Shown for the first time at Southern 2018 will be the new Master Cable Carrier, developed with Industry 4.0 applications in mind. A reduced wall thickness allows more interior-space: compared to the previous drag chain, this achieves a vertical space saving of 50 % and 37.5 % in the horizontal. At the same time, they are easy to open and fill, for time-saving harnessing from all sides.

Diverse range

A diverse range of manufacturing and engineering companies rely on nitrogen gas to keep their processes clean and dry. Alongside a range of compressors and vacuum pumps, compressed air specialists BCAS, will be demonstrating the benefits of creating nitrogen in-house. Nitrogen generators allow users to produce a reliable, secure and safe source of nitrogen from an existing compressed air supply, thereby making significant cost savings.

Specialising in the design and manufacture of pressure transducers and pressure transmitters, ESI Technology was established in 1985, and focuses on specialist applications using sensing technologies such as its innovative silicon-on-sapphire strain gauge. At Southern 2018 the company will be highlighting solutions for applications in oil and gas, subsea, aerospace, defence, hydraulics, depth/level, hazardous area, automotive, process and industrial, test calibration and OEM markets.
