IET bursary scheme for future engineers

02 August, 2017

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is calling for promising future engineers to apply for its Engineering Horizons Bursary scheme, which offers support to students and apprentices who have faced obstacles or personal challenges and need financial assistance to help them during their studies or apprenticeships. This year’s scheme is opening with initial 10 grants supported by the National Grid.

Funding will be awarded to students on an IET accredited degree course in the UK and apprentices on an IET approved apprenticeship scheme. They will each receive an award of £1000 per year for the duration of their degree course (up to three years for BEng and four years for Meng) or apprenticeships (up to four years). Bursary winners will also benefit from a range of support from the IET and, in return, will be great role models for engineering.

Layla Graham, who received a bursary last year supported by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, said the funding makes it possible for her to attend training events and get involved in volunteering opportunities that she otherwise would have to miss out on: “I was honoured to receive the IET Engineering Horizons Bursary – it’s fantastic how the IET recognises student engineers who have come from different backgrounds and qualifications to get onto a degree programme. As a student and mother of a young family I am using the bursary to enable me to volunteer.”

Jeremy Watson, the IET president, added: “We have created these awards to ensure that personal circumstances aren’t a barrier for new talent entering the profession whether that is at student or apprentice level. These awards send a clear message to young people: a career as an engineer or technician is a choice for anyone regardless of their background, gender, financial or personal circumstances. We are delighted that National Grid have pledged to support this programme and strongly encourage more companies to come forward and engage with these future engineers.”
