IMI Precision Engineering launches the all-new ISOLine cylinders range

16 June, 2017

IMI Precision Engineering launched a new platform pneumatic actuator range, ISOLine at the Hannover Messe 2017. Built on reliable and robust IMI Norgren technology, ISOLine has been designed to offer a system that simplifies installation, increases service life and reduces maintenance costs.

The ISOLine range introduces the IMI Norgren Adaptive Cushioning System (ACS). ACS automatically adjusts the cylinder cushioning for changing loads, so manual cushion screw setting is not required. It also removes the need for specialist knowledge and simplifies the installation process, for safer, smoother operation.

Production conditions can constantly change, which can affect the efficiency and performance of cylinders. With ACS, a cushioning solution is now available that is able to perform even under changing loads and pressures. The sleeve slides into the cushion seal resulting in an almost close chamber with damping pressure. Small grooves on the cushion sleeve allow the air to exhaust slowly, and the kinetic energy is reduced to a minimum so that the piston reaches the end position smoothly. There is no need for manual adjustment on set-up and the system constantly adapts to load and pressure changes.

Manual and fully self-adjusting cushioning

Bernward Sprünken, team leader of IMI Precision Engineering’s Business Development Group, commented: “The new cylinder’s cushioning system, comprises a combination of manual and fully self-adjusting cushioning. Both systems are available with other cylinders, but only as separate options. We have combined these features because from an engineering point of view we know this offers the best solution. Users need no specialist knowledge for set-up, so this helps to minimise installation time – you can basically fit the actuator and forget about it.”

Conforming to ISO standard 15552, the product range is up to 20% lighter than previous pneumatic cylinders. ISOLine also provides improved performance; it has a lower breakaway pressure and reduced minimum speed. Available in sizes 32-125mm, the streamlined design of ISOLine offers a modern look with a clean profile. For system designers, additional switch mounting gives greater design flexibility.

Sprünken explained that the cylinder features an I/O link sensor, so users can measure current temperature levels etc. If the cylinder ceases to function efficiently and the friction level increases, this can mean the sealing will fail a short time afterwards. With this new sensor technology, operators can act before something more serious occurs. “This sensor can play an important role within a company’s preventive maintenance strategy – we are really talking about Industry 4.0 from a maintenance point of view,” said Sprünken. The sensor can record operating temperatures, so operators can easily see that there was, for example, a peek in temperature at a certain time during the week. The I/O link sensor communicates between cylinder and the bus system.
