Call for papers for BCS conference on SFIA in education and workplace learning

13 February, 2012

With skills development high on the agenda for many organisations, BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, is calling for papers for its forthcoming Using SFIA in Education and Workplace Learning conference which will take place 13 June 2012.

The conference, which is supported by The Open University and the SFIA Foundation, will look at the various uses of the Skills Framework in the Information Age (SFIA) in practical learning contexts.

Jooli Atkins, Chair of the BCS Learning and Development specialist group which is organising the event explains more: “Skills development is a major concern for many organisations. It is important to ensure that you can recruit, train and very importantly, retain the right employees. SFIA is a great basis used by many organisations to help them with this.”

Kevin Streater, Head of IT Industry Engagement at The Open University, and a member of the SFIA Council adds: “SFIA is the language that enables learning and development practitioners in industry to engage with workplace learning providers such as The Open University.  This conference will provide an excellent platform to explore this in depth.”

The launch of SFIA 5 in December 2011 saw a major change to learning and development within the SFIA framework, with the skills development category extended to include further and higher education delivery as well as workplace learning and development. Speakers invited to present include:

•           Alan Hewitt, former HR director, IBM UK and member of SFIA 5 Project Board
•           Andy Thompson, QA Ltd
•           Susan Bailey, University of Northampton Business School
•           Kevin Streater, The Open University
•           Paul Jagger, IBM United Kingdom Limited

Jooli adds: ”The conference programme is in development and we’re now inviting individuals and organisations to present papers and presentations for the conference on a wide range of topics.”
Possible subjects are:

•           Using SFIA to assess competence
•           Using SFIA to develop Higher Education curricula
•           SFIA as a tool to build L&D programmes for industry
•           Recognition of SFIA based education by Professional Bodies
•           Continuing Professional Development using SFIA
•           SFIA and Learning and Development Management
