Shell’s new Tellus S2 products offer more oil life, excellent wear protection and improved filterability

25 October, 2016

The new Shell Tellus S2 MX for stationary systems is among the first hydraulic oils on the market to meet Bosch Rexroth’s new approval standards. Designed for the manufacturing industry, it demonstrates excellent wear protection, even under operating conditions that are thirteen times more severe than those required by standard industry tests.

Developed for hydraulic applications in the mining and construction sectors, Shell Tellus S2 VX for mobile hydraulic systems is formulated with a high viscosity index for optimal performance over a wide range of operating temperatures.1

“Systems are increasingly having to operate under greater pressures which puts greater stress on hydraulic oils. We have responded to this by introducing an improved formulation that not only helps to improve performance, but also to optimise reliability of hydraulic systems,” said Mark Draper, technology manager at Shell Lubricants.

Reduced risk of filter clogging

The oil life of both new products has been shown to exceed the usual requirements of industry and OEM limits by up to three times. In addition, Shell Tellus S2 MX and Shell Tellus S2 VX offer improved filterability2 – even under humid conditions. This helps reduce the risk of filter clogging leading to equipment failure, allowing users to get more out of their hydraulic systems, increase productivity through longer maintenance cycles and reduce maintenance and operating costs due to more efficient operation.

Reduced overall operating costs

“Our goal when developing Shell lubricants is to help our customers reduce the overall operating costs of their systems as much as possible through improved lubrication. The quality and condition of a hydraulic oil directly affect system performance,” continued Draper. “Therefore, we focus not only on developing new, high-quality lubricants, but also on helping our customers to use them correctly. This provides the basis for optimal system performance.”

Shell Tellus S2 MX and Shell Tellus S2 VX are compatible with previous generations of Shell Tellus hydraulic oils, as well as many commercial mineral-based hydraulic oils. This makes it especially easy for users to take advantage of the new formulation in their hydraulic systems.
