Letter to the editor - Quality is worth the outlay

22 November, 2011

Sir

It should go without saying that in the case of industrial or mobile plant and equipment the quality of the parts, components and the kit itself is critical. This is a fundamental requirement in order to militate against the risk of unforeseen downtime or machinery behaving in an unpredictable or potentially dangerous fashion. In my experience, some companies that re-sell equipment sourced from areas such as the Far East often don’t fully realise the damage they could be causing to the efficient operation of their customers’ plant and equipment. This is mainly because many products that they source from the Asia Pacific or other territories are simply not as tried and tested as the well-established brands that have been performing to a high standard in the West for decades.
The good news is that many suppliers, OEMs and users themselves are increasingly saying they don’t want to source ‘cheap and cheerful’ parts and equipment. This may be largely due to their awareness of instances where such products have proved unreliable and costly; either for themselves or for other companies in their market space. With this in mind, companies, in our experience, are increasingly willing to pay a little more for their parts and equipment and understand that quality cost money.
Some Far Eastern products can look very similar to equipment and parts that have been widely used in the West for many years. However it is vitally important to be able to make the differentiation. Downtime can be exorbitantly expensive, and can often be suffered as a result of using cheaper products or parts. So although products and parts sourced from long-proven and highly respected brands and their distributors might appear to be stretching your budget just that bit too far, they can be worth their weight in gold by ensuring your plant and equipment remains operational and profitable for longer periods. In many instances, they can also perform to a notably higher standard of efficiency.
In our experience, the more successful resellers are those that promote and supply proven premium branded products. The reason for their success has to be due to an encouraging number of users realising they can only truly sleep well at night if they know the parts and equipment they use is of a quality that has been proven time and again to underpin the efficient running of countless businesses up and down the country.
