New German logistics centre for Schwer Fittings

27 October, 2011

Schwer Fittings officially opened its new HQ and logistics centre in Denkingen, Germany last month (September). The new site, which is situated near to the location of the company’s previous HQ, has been in the planning stage for the past ten years and took approximately two years to build. Wolfgang Moellers, managing director of Schwer UK, commented that the rationale behind the new building was primarily to establish a new central logistics hub that benefits from state-of-the-art computerised stock control, therefore having the ability to better manage stock and increase availability. “These benefits enable Schwer to provide an even better service to customers because everything’s all in one place,” said Moellers.

He added that the building has also been designed with a focus on environmental sustainability. “It has no air conditioning and a lot of green insulation,” explained Moellers. “Staff simply open the large glass windows to enjoy fresh air, and the windows are also designed to make maximum benefit of natural light and heat. The local, largely rural, setting in Denkingen is also very appealing.”

Family culture
The official opening of the new premises was complemented by a Schwer party weekend, which the Schwer family staged both as an event to mark the official opening of the new building as well as a special ‘thank you’ to its staff – both local and from the company’s European regional branches – and customers. “Every regional branch of Schwer was invited to join in with the festivities and invite their own customers along as well,” explained Moellers. “And it was good to hear our customers comment that the family-run business treated its staff very much as part of their family. In fact, many of our customers noted that this business culture can also be felt at our own UK branch and at other branches across Europe.”
In addition to celebrating the establishment of the new German logistics centre, Schwer has been actively pursuing a number of new certifications, in addition to having German Lloyds classification for the maritime and energy industries for the past decade. Last year the company was awarded the German Lloyds Gold award. It has also recently been awarded RINA, certification, GOST certification, ABS (American Bureau of Ship Builders) classification and has DNV (offshore, wind turbine structures and components) standards certification pending. Additionally, the company recently became a full BFPA member.
