Giant power pack for earthquake simulator gets thumbs up

01 October, 2012

Believed to be one of the biggest hydraulic power packs to be built in the UK in the past 12 months, the 2MW unit, designed and built by Branch Hydraulic Systems, has received the seal of approval from customer, Zetatek Industries.

During a visit to the Gloucester-based business, representatives from Zetatek Industries Ltd along with servohydraulic test and motion simulation specialist, Servotest Testing Systems, met with the Branch Hydraulic Systems team to formalise the sign off and approval of the giant power unit. Designed to drive a large earthquake simulator for use by the Indian Nuclear Research facility, the power pack was checked for accuracy, build quality and the quality of component parts.

Giant proportions
A representative from Zetatek industries said that the scale of the unit surprised him. Branch Hydraulic Systems’ technical director, Alex Tatlow, said: “Customers are often unable to visualise the size and scale of a system when they see it on paper, but when they see it complete – especially one like this with such giant proportions –  it really takes them by surprise. Seeing it here today, finished to such a high standard, it makes us feel really rather proud to be sending this to India, as an example of British engineering capability.”
