PCL backs Hankook campaign to put pressure on drivers to check tyres

PCL has joined Hankook Tyres’ CEO in his bid to alert drivers to the dangers of driving with poorly inflated tyres. At the Tyre Society's 29th Annual Meeting and Conference on Tyre Science and Technology, Seung Hwa Suh called for tyre manufacturers to "jointly develop a global campaign for educating consumers about air pressure, and the overwhelming benefits that we can all enjoy if we simply maintain proper inflation.”

As an international expert in tyre inflation equipment, PCL sees it as their duty to inform customers about the safety risks associated with tyres which are not inflated properly. PCL also promotes the environmental benefits of accurate inflation, including decreased fuel consumption and increased tyre life.
 
In his speech, Seung Hwa Suh quoted a survey from the Rubber Manufacturers Association, which showed that millions of US drivers fail to ensure their tyres are inflated properly, with only one in six vehicles having accurate pressure, and 55% with at least one under-inflated.
 
Issues also exist in Europe with, for example, UK drivers similarly lax when it comes to checking their tyre pressure, and it’s for this reason the European Union has introduced legislation stipulating that all new cars sold in the EU from 2014 will have to be fitted with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, providing warnings when tyres reach a critical level. 
 
In the US, California lead the way with legislation coming into effect earlier this year, ensuring that the majority of companies supplying tyre inflation must deliver inflation to an accuracy of +/- 2psi. A move that the California Air Resources Board believes could save 75 million gallons of fuel per year.
